In this week’s news headlines, it’s bad news for nearly all of K-Beauty’s biggest companies, with many having been forced to downsize their staff over the course of the last year due to complications caused by Coronavirus. From AmorePacific to Kolmar Korea, Coson, Aekyung Industries and more, very few big players made it out of the pandemic unscathed.
For many of us, our first steps into skincare come when we start high school.
The main skincare concerns for teens are:
1 Acne
2 Excess oil production
Getting acne under control can be complicated, with different treatments for different types of acne (eg. clogged pores or hormonal).
At the outset, it’s really important to note that if your daily skincare routine doesn’t help, you may need to visit a dermatologist for more advanced treatments.
At Home K-Beauty Treatments to Try:
My favourite K-Beauty brands for teenage skin are COSRX, iUNIK and Benton as their products are cheap and cheerful and tend to focus on uncomplicated formulas with lighter textures.
After conquering teenage skin concerns, entering your 20s is a great time to set up a foundation for your skin. If you’ve got acne scars, think about introducing products to help your skin’s texture and tone.
While your oiliest days are hopefully behind you, it’s not uncommon for adults to still be dealing with oily and combination skin.Double cleansing is the perfect way to tackle this, especially if you wear sunscreen or makeup.
My favourite products for this age group:
By your 30s, you should hopefully be over the acne and oilier skin of your younger years. But…you may also be seeing the first signs of aging, with fine lines, wrinkles and dehydration making an appearance.
Although aging is inevitable, using the right skincare products can keep your skin looking younger for longer.
If you haven’t started using targeted essences or serums yet, this is the right time to start. Some of my favourite essences for this age group are:
Your 40s is when you really start to see major changes in the firmness of your skin. You're dealing with loss of volume and elasticity (leading to skin that appears saggy), as well as more pronounced wrinkles and sun damage, which may lead to conditions like melasma.
Hormone levels start to drop long before entering menopause. During peri-menopause, as eostrogen levels fall, many women first notice their skin is much drier than before. This is a common finding, but if not addressed, can lead to premature fine wrinkling around the eyes and mouth.
For moisturisers and anti-redness I love:
Best Serums
As you age, your skin will feel drier and thinner. This is because your collagen levels decrease over time.
Post menopause, our bodies experience a hormone shift with declining levels of oestrogen and increased levels of androgens and this can affect the skin. Dealing with these concerns will help you to not only protect and nourish your skin, but also support your skin’s ability to renew collagen.
For skin in its 50s and beyond, essences really come into their own. Some of my favourites are:
To complement it, try adding in some K-Beauty serums:
