"Microneedling in a Bottle" Scam
On this episode, we’re covering the MFDS’s latest crackdown on skincare products claiming to offer “microneedling in a bottle”. Plus, one of our listeners requested a Korean swap for Glow Recipe’s Niacinamide Dew Drops, which we’re answering. Lauren discusses why Jelly Ko has launched 3 skin care refills in 2024 and she introduces herAutumn/Winter K-beauty skincare routine recommendations.
Cosmetics claiming to have "microneedling" capabilities might be the latest TikTok craze but as it turns out they've also been the subject of action by Korea’s Ministry of Food & Drug Safety ("MFDS").
Last month, the MFDS identified 82 instances of false and/or excessive advertising violating the Cosmetics Act. Their investigation determined that certain companies have been advertising "acupuncture cosmetic ingredients" as if they can:
+ other claims that are outside the scope of the definition of "cosmetics".
In reality, these products use silica, which is hardened into the shape of a needle, that presses against the skin without actually penetrating the dermis (Cf. true microneedling).
Below are some examples of advertising violations taken from the MFDS's publication "식약처, 마이크로니들 내세운 화장품 허위‧과대 광고 점검".
The offending ads were removed from Korean broadcasting channels. However, many of the offending ads have been replicated in their entirety into English, Chinese, Vietnamese and other languages and are being used to market the same products globally.
It will be interesting to see if overseas regulatory bodies like Australia's TGA or the US FDA make any moves to stop these claims being replicated abroad.

Jelly Ko has just released 3 new product refills:
Why we’re focusing on refills:
The beauty industry has a waste problem and we want to do what we can to reduce it. That’s why even more of our products are now refillable.
Sustainability is important to us. It’s why we signed on to 1% For the Planet, committing to donate 1% of our annual revenue 2 years into launching our brand. It’s also why we decided to swap over from regular paper to using recycled paper for our boxes and print using soy ink. We also make our products free from microplastics. Last year, we released scoops for our lip mask that are made from zinc, which is indefinitely recyclable.
In short, we punch above our weight for a small beauty brand.
Now we can add to that another achievement: Launching refills. Refillable skincare products can save up to 80% of the plastic waste of traditional single-use packaging. That’s why we think it’s so important to offer them as alternatives for our customers, particularly for our more popular SKUs like Dewy Glaze Toner, which has a high rate of repurchase.
However, this is only the start of our journey We look forward to bringing even more improvements and transparency to you as our brand continues to grow.
For the colder months the most important thing is proper hydration. I usually incorporate this at multiple steps of my routine to ensure the skin is hydrated to its fulles.
My personal routine includes:
