WHAT IS HIFU?

• HIFU - Stands for high intensity focused ultrasound
• A non-surgical lifting treatment 
• Goes deeper than just the skin’s surface and encourage regeneration of the skin’s collagen from deep within.
• The three most popular in Korea are Ulthera, Shurink and Liftera 
• These lifting treatments go deeper than just the skin’s surface and encourage regeneration of the skin’s collagen. They aren't lasers but are based on ultrasound technology. 
• The procedures are designed to improve skin tone, texture, and elasticity by lifting and tightening the skin naturally and gradually.
• In Korea, these procedures aren’t just for people in their middle ages; in fact many people in their 20s and up are doing them to achieve a more lifted jaw and the Korean v-line face/v-shaped jawline.

Differences between Ulthera, Shurink & Liftera

ULTHERA

• A US FDA-cleared procedure that uses Micro-focused Ultrasound (MFU) energy to lift and tighten the skin.
• It stimulates collagen production by delivering ultrasound energy into the skin’s foundational layer without disturbing the skin’s surface.
• The ultrasound energy bypasses the skin’s layers and triggers a natural response under the skin that produces collagen.
• A treatment for the full face takes 45 minutes to an hour.

SHURINK

• Shurink is a locally developed technology in Korea that uses High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) energy to boost collagen renewal in the skin.
• It also works to remodel collagen, and targets sagging skin and tightening 
• The main difference between Shurink and Ulthera lies in the process. For the Ulthera treatment, ultrasound image processing is done to identify the specific areas to direct the ultrasound energy. With Shurink, cartridges emitting different wavelengths are applied without the visualisation. 

LIFTERA

• Almost identical to Shurink, Liftera is Korean ultrasound treatment that is popular in Korea.
• The difference between Liftera and Shurink is the design of the cartridge used during treatment.
• Liftera uses pen cartridge applicators and a treatment is a little longer because the target areas are smaller compared to Shurink. 

What happens during the procedure

• The treatment area is cleansed first
• The treatment applicator is placed against your skin.
• For Ulthera, the practitioner gets a clear ultrasound image first in order to determine the treatment energy 

Does it hurt?

Yes. 

In my experience, the most unpleasant part is when the device is passing over your teeth. However, the pain is temporary and did not last after the treatment was over.

What to expect after treatment

• No downtime, so you can get straight back to your daily routine
• Some people can experience slight swelling, tenderness or tingling, but these are mild and temporary
• Make sure you discuss all risks and possible outcomes with your doctor prior to treatment so you can make an informed decision.

What does HIFU do?

• Lifting ultrasound treats the deep layers of skin tissue without disturbing the surface of the skin
• It involves focused ultrasound with no surgery, needles or disruption to the surface of the skin.

Who should do a lifting treatment?

Can HIFU replace a facelift?

• No.
• It's a non-surgical procedure so it goes without saying that you're not going to get the same results as an actual facelift. If you go in with the right expectations, you will be more likely to be pleased with your results.
