Snail…what?!
If you’re wondering “Why should I use snail mucin?”, then allow us to explain, because this much-loved K-Beauty ingredient is in some of the best K-Beauty products!
It’s one of those beauty ingredients that evokes a wide range of reactions – from disbelief and incredulity to fear, wonder and sheer curiosity.
First up, and most importantly – it is NOT the snails themselves. Yes, you heard right, snail mucin is not snail (or crushed up snail, or anything gruesome).
It’s the snail’s trail, the thing they leave behind when the slide along the ground!
Snail mucin is naturally produced by snails to heal the cuts they receive on their fragile bodies. It’s also the substance that serves to protect snails from bacteria and UV rays. It can be broken down into other components that are already widely used in the beauty industry, like hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and various proteins.
Believe it or not, snail secretion filtrate is actually not a new discovery. It’s been used for centuries across different cultures as a healing treatment. With regular application, snail mucin can assist in:
- Firming and tightening the skin
- Giving plumper, softer and more youthful-looking skin
- Reducing visible scarring (from acne and pimples)
- Reducing uneven skin tone and redness
- Hydrating dry, dull, rough and taut skin
You’ll find it in a side range of Korean Beauty products, from essences to moisturisers, face masks and even BB Cream.
Tips
Don’t be put off by the fact that it is mucus.
Despite its name, snail mucin is not gooey. It is most often light in texture, with a minimal to neutral fragrance.
Due to its viscosity, it makes a great binding agent. It’s perfect to include as one of the final steps in your beauty routine when layering products.
