Summer Skin Care Routine For Oily/Acne Prone Skin?
While it might not have been the Hot Girl Summer we were all hoping for (cheers Omicron) for those of us with oily or acne prone skin our routine still might need a bit of fine tuning.
When the temperature rises and the humidity kicks in it can spell disaster for oily skin. Worrying about greasy skin or extra breakouts is not on our holiday "To Do" list so let’s put the spotlight on some of your Go To Summer Skincare for Oily/Acne Prone Skin. That way we can all kick back, unwind and have a margarita… (even if it is indoors…cheers La Nina)
Just because our skin is oily doesn’t mean we need to overdo it with cleansing. Twice a day is all you need. Don't be tempted to cleanse more than this because if you over cleanse your face you can end up damaging your skin's barrier. This can contribute to irritation and redness and even end up producing more sebum. Not ideal.
This gentle cleansing oil from natural Korean beauty label APLB is made with botanical oils. It helps cleanse makeup and waste from the skin.
The texture is super lightweight and holds onto pores tightly for an effective and deep cleanse.
Star ingredients include Black Food 3x complex, Salicylic Acid and Avocado Oil.
If you love traditional cleansing oils this is a beautiful option for your first cleanse.
If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful cleanser that’s simple yet effective then COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanseris definitely worth a try. With its combination of salicylic acid and tea tree oil, this cleanser reduces breakouts and promotes clear skin. We love that it skips out on alcohols and cleanses without drying the skin.
Meet your new best friend; Subi Holo Dream Pore Minimising Mask. This dreamy girl does it all – detoxifying, skin brightening, pore tightening and texture refining.
Formulated with Australia Kakadu Plum, Ceramides, Sodium Hyaluronate and Kaolin it's perfect for before bed or before your makeup. Added bonus? 100% alcohol-free, fragrance free and cruelty free. Oh, and the packaging is AMAZING.
If you haven’t already tried the SOME BY MI AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner it’s time!
This cult favourite toner works to remove dead skin cells and the dirt and debris that can block and clog pores, leading to breakouts. With over 1.2 million units sold worldwide this tried and tested toner has a unique formulation that contains a variety of skincare acids which remove impurities from the skin gently, and without irritation - leaving you with healthy, clean skin.
Looking for a toner on the go?
The APLB Centella Complex Mist Toner has you covered. Made on a base of Centella asiatica, this mist toner is perfectly balanced with a PH of 5.5. It supplies nutrition and hydration while also supporting the skin’s barrier. Another bonus is that it comes in a giant 150ml bottle so it will last you the whole summer!
Try the Vitamin C Ampoule from Innisfree. This is formulated using 20% pure Vitamin C. Ideal for those with oily skin, this ampoule improves on the stickiness and oiliness of other Vitamin C serums on the market. It also targets dark, red spots and pigmentation.
Another bonus? It’s hypoallergenic so no need to worry if you have sensitive skin.
If you are wanting a lightweight, non-greasy cream that also introduces a retinol into your routine then meet Chosungah 22 Retinol 2500 IU Cream.
This cream contains a stabilised form of retinol which helps tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. It's perfect for those in their late 20’s and 30’s who are wanting to even out their skin tone but are also weary of early signs of ageing.
Word of warning. As with all retinoids this can cause your skin to be more affected by UV rays and prone to sunburn (read here for more retinol side effects) so if you are someone who loves to be outdoors in Summer or you have quite pale skin ensure that you use this sparingly.
Use it every other day for two weeks when introducing it into your routine and ditch the scrubs and peeling products – your skin won’t need them.
Use it at night whenever possible but ensure that you are hyper vigilant with your sunscreen during the day. Avoid UV rays as much as possible while using any retinoid as usage can increase your risk of skin cancer when burnt.
This is also a good time to remind everyone that just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean you should skip the sunscreen! Choose a lightweight, non-sticky sunscreen for your morning routine. Swap out your foundation for a lightweight BB cream (we love the Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream) then ensure you are double cleansing at night before bed.
A more chill option?
COSRX Oil Free Ultra-Moisturising Lotion. Suitable for all skin types this lightweight moisturiser is a perfect addition to your daily routine. Formulated with 70% birch sap content, which is loaded with vitamins and antioxidants this moisturiser hydrates, protects and boosts the complexion. Birch sap is also known to ease irritation and hydrate the skin for hours.
If you haven’t added a sleeping mask into your routine, it’s time to get on it. Who doesn’t want a formulation that works while you sleep?
Our favourite? Jelly Ko Cherry Blossom Sleeping Mask, of course. Don’t worry, this won’t make you wake up with oily skin!
Packed with Cherry Blossom (known for its antioxidant properties), Niacinamide and Vitamin B5 a little goes a long way.
Simply pop on a sparing amount about 30 minutes before bed and wake up to dewy, plump skin.
Added bonus? It has a nice cooling effect, perfect for summer nights.

If you have active breakouts, Subi Perfect Pimple Patches are the answer.
"Perfect" is in the name for a reason.
These almost invisible stickers are made of hydrocolloid which speeds up healing and prevents scarring. These hydrocolloid patches bring out the infection while keeping the spot covered and protected from dirt (and fingers).
Don’t worry about sweating these ones off in the summer heat, we’ve worn them to Hot Yoga before and they survived 40 degrees. These stickers mean absolute business.
