Best K-Beauty for Anti-Ageing
Products that claim to ‘turn back the clock’ and ‘defy time’ have been selling promises to women for the last hundred years. But we want to take a more realistic and mindful approach when discussing skincare for mature skin.
When we talk about anti-ageing skincare, it’s important to us that we don’t create a negative rhetoric around the concept of ‘ageing’.
The beauty and fashion industries can be huge drivers convincing us we must strive for eternal youth. That wrinkles, loss of elasticity and other signs of ageing should be avoided at all costs.
Rather than instilling a fear around the process of ageing, we want to discuss how and why our skin ages. We'll talk through the steps we can implement to best care for our skin at every stage along this journey.
It happens to everyone!
Once we turn about 25, we begin to lose around 1% of our skin’s collagen per year.
As we lose collagen, we start to also see some other signs of ageing. We experience a loss of elasticity (or the bounciness) and fine lines and wrinkles will start to appear.
Depending on the climate in which we live and the amount of melanin in our skin, we will start to see pigmentation and sunspots. All of this is natural, completely unavoidable and happens to every single human living on the planet.
Lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors also play a part when it comes to the ageing of your skin. Last but not least (and this is one of the things you can control!) how we care for our skin via our skincare regimes.
This one pretty much speaks for itself. There is little point going to war with your DNA. Like in most areas of your life, genetics heavily determine how and when your skin starts to loose collagen and show signs of ageing.
If you start seeing premature ageing on your face and can’t pinpoint why, book an appointment with your dermatologist. They are the best professionals to talk you through genetic factors and how they might be impacting your skin (and also if there are steps you can take should you want to intervene.)
This one is super important for Aussies.
We live in a harsh climate and are geographically located close to the hole in the ozone layer.
Culturally, we LOVE the sun and the outdoors and are shaped by our closeness to the beach, surf and sun. This is great, but not without side effects. UV rays are one of the quickest way to age and damage the skin.
We must take this seriously because sun exposure and skin damage go way beyond the superficial appearance of the skin. Australians have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world so it's critical to "Slip, Slop, Slap" every day. If you haven’t got an SPF in your everyday routine, then consider this your gentle slap on the wrist. Don’t hesitate. Get onto it now.
Lifestyle factors that can speed up our skins ageing process include cigarettes, alcohol, sugar, and drugs. This is probably not that surprising.
The toxins in all of these take a huge toll on the body and the skin is the biggest organ of the body.
Cut down or eliminate these factors and your skin will look healthier and younger for longer. By the same token, things that are great for the skin are clean eating, water and an active lifestyle.
Finally, our skincare routine can play a part in maintaining the health and integrity of our skin. While skincare won’t stop the process of ageing, what it will do is minimise and reduce visible signs of ageing while ensuring that our skin is clean, hydrated, and nourished.
Implementing a proper routine that cares for the skin as early as possible is a great way to ensure that your skin looks great at every age.
Choosing products that have the right pH balance, won’t damage the skin's barrier and won’t be too harsh on your skin are all vital steps in the K-Beauty philosophy.
