It might seem counterintuitive to apply oil to oily skin. Turns out, it’s actually a great idea!
We’re exploring why oily skin types can actually benefit most from oils, and the best facial oils for oily skin to use.
It seems like a bad idea, right? Oily face + oily product = more oil.
Wrong
In fact, oily skin is often plagued by over-active oil glands, and these glands become over-active to compensate from a lack of oil in the skin to begin with. This is why it’s never a good idea for oily skin types to skip moisturiser – basically, they need all the help they can get to stay hydrated. Funnily enough, this also makes oily skin types ideal candidates for facial oils.
Oily skin can benefit from oils because they actually help dissolve the excess sebum built up in the skin, while also providing hydration.
The key is to match oily skin with oils that balance the complexion. This is where texture comes into play.
Texture is important when choosing the right oils – unlike dry skin, which requires a heavy oil, oilier skin types need a fast-acting, non-greasy and lightweight formula.
Some of the oils we love include:
The best time to apply your oil is at night before you go to sleep, as this is when the face loses more of its natural oils.
If you’re being cautious about which oils to avoid, for oily skin types we would recommend skipping:
Coconut oil – it’s heavier and can clog pores, meaning it’s not ideal for oily or acne prone types.
Wheat germ oil – this is a highly comedogenic oil, making it a no-go for oily skin types, as it can clog pores, contributing to breakouts and more.
While you’ll find plenty of oils on the market (both K-Beauty and otherwise), we can’t go past Benton Carrot Oilfor oily skin. That's because it is a non-greasy formula packed full of carotene from carrots, along with Vitamin E. This is an ideal option for helping to recalibrate the balance between oil and moisture in oilier skin types. One STYLE STORY customer, Kathleen, said:
"I love this oil! It's super moisturizing and hydrating but not sticky or doesn't make my face feel oily - feels really lux!!!"
