The Mainstays of K-Beauty

K-Beauty News Headlines

New Snail Products Launching in Korea

  • Surprisingly, I have seen a few new snail launches featuring black snail and even blue snail

Lauren in Marie Claire Magazine

  • In my interview with Marie Claire we discussed some of the mainstays of K-Beauty. I mentioned that K-Beauty is a “skincare first, makeup second” approach to beauty, with an emphasis on hydration over exfoliation.
  • Rather than a set of steps that need to be followed it’s really more about customising an approach to care for your skin’s needs at different stages of life or times of the year.
  • The products and textures that are suitable for the skin in winter are not the same as what the skin needs in summer, so there’s a lot of focus on learning what your skin needs and responding to that.
  • Some of the key ingredients at the moment are probiotics, Centella asiatica (or Cica), heartleaf, mugwort and ginseng. Bakuchiol and retinol are also trending this year,  albeit in small doses so as not to irritate the skin.

No Mask Era Spurs Sales of Cosmetics

  • With the end of Korea's indoor mask mandate on 30 January 2023, demand for color cosmetics has risen
  • According to the "2022 Settlement Keyword" released by Olive Young, sales  increased 50% last year (January to November) compared to the same period in 2021. Base makeup products such as cushions and foundations rose 70% and lip makeup products rose 65%.
  • Men are also getting in one the action.
  • Euromonitor reported that Korea's men's cosmetics market has grown from 700 billion won in 2010 to 1.4 trillion won in 2020, showing rapid growth of about 10% every year.
