SUBI BEAUTY PERFECT PIMPLE PATCH REVIEW
Thinner is not always better, but when it comes to pimple patches – it is!
Today, we’re deep diving on a newly released K-Beauty product that has revolutionised pimple patches. If you’re still using yours at night, the concept of wearing an acne patch around during the day might sound crazy. But what about if that patch was invisible?
That’s the question Subi asked when creating their Perfect Pimple Patch – a 100% cruelty-free, vegan, alcohol-free, drug-free patch product that’s taking over Instagram feeds. Did we mention the holo packaging?! Read on for our Subi Beauty Perfect Pimple Patch review:
WHAT IS IT?
Subi is a newly released Korean skincare brand that fuses the best of A-Beauty (think clean, natural and minimalist skincare ingredients) with the best of K-Beauty (cutting edge technology that works).
“Subi” means “defence” in Korean and that’s exactly what Subi products are designed to do – act as a defence for your skin. Their first release – Perfect Pimple Patch – is no exception, with a silicone-free, paraben-free, fungal-acne safe formula that’s designed to treat pimples quickly and safely with as minimal fuss as possible.
WHAT DOES IT CLAIM TO DO?
The brand claims that Perfect Pimple Patch is “razor thin and completely invisible so that you can heal skin on-the-go without others in the know.”
WHAT’S IN IT?
The full ingredients list is:
“Cellulose gum, styrene isoprene, styrene block copolymer, polyisobutylene, petroleum resin, polyurethane film liquid, paraffin, tetrakis methane.”
Short and sweet and skips out on plenty of nasties! In addition to being vegan and cruelty-free (which is awesome enough in itself!) unlike many of the ingredients commonly found in anti-acne products (like benzoyl peroxide, calamine lotion and salicylic acid) that work by drying the skin out, Subi’s patches instead work by trapping the pus from pimples with heads inside the patch itself.
This is perfect for those who find regular anti-acne products irritating, or leave their skin sensitive, red and flaky. It also means there aren’t any actual drugs in the product, which is a win for pregnant and breastfeeding mums whose skin might be going haywire but who can’t reach for any topical treatments containing Vitamin A.
HOW DO YOU USE IT?
The first thing to note about these patches is that unlike some acne patch products on the market (i.e. needle patches), Subi’s patches are designed to treat whiteheads. These are the bumpy, pus-filled pimples that appear on the surface of the skin – the ones that look juicy and so tempting to just pop! These aren’t the same thing as cysts or nodules, which occur deep below the surface of the skin.
Hydrocolloid works best on pimples like this that have already come to a head, so if your pimple is still underneath the skin or takes the form of a “blind pimple” (with no visible head), then save your patches as these aren’t the product for them.
Once you’ve identified the pimple you want to treat, start by cleansing your face thoroughly and dry the whole area to be treated.
When it comes to pimple patches, it is important to double cleanse the skin (with an oil cleanser first, followed by a foam cleanser). Make sure also that you’re using pH balanced 5.5 products. If not, your skin might be too oily for the product to adhere properly to the skin.
Apply a spot patch directly over the pimple and press down lightly to make sure the sides have stuck down. (Hack – these pimple patches actually come with perforated lines down their plastic backing sheet, so you can crack the backing sheet in half to easily pull the patches off without ruining them).
The best way to tell when your patch is ready to be removed is to wait for it to turn milky white or opaque (which indicates that the pus from the pimple has been absorbed onto the patch) or when the edges of the patch start coming loose.
If your patch was particularly milky, you’re probably going to want to apply another one to absorb any leftover pus.
WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY DO?
Magic. Magic is what it actually does!
It’s hard to believe that something so thin has the capacity to absorb so much gunk from the skin but there’s no doubt that these patches actually work. Like, pull the pimple out from the root kinda work.
The key is to make sure you leave them on for long enough and don’t rip them off too early – if you do, you risk interrupting the skin’s healing.
They need time to actually absorb everything.
We found that if we pulled them off too early, they were only halfway through the job so the gunk hadn’t actually been fully absorbed onto the patch but was still sitting on top of the skin, the pimple having been destroyed in a goopy, mess. This is easy enough to wipe away but when you leave them on longer the real magic happens – they literally suck the life out of the pimple and even close the hole over afterwards as a courtesy :p
In terms of visibility, these are the thinnest, least visible patches we have ever seen on the market. They work really well on a variety of skin shades, although being translucent they do show up more on darker skin types.
These patches do come in just one size – 10mm – but we’re calling this a plus as this is definitely the size that most people reach most often. If you have a reaaaallllly giant pimple, you may need an extra patch or two but that’s far better than going through all the good-sized patches in a packet and being left with the ones at the end that you don’t use.
Meet pimple patches 2.0.
These bad boys are thinner, sleeker and come in far prettier packaging than the OG ones.
If you don’t like interrupting your treatment by removing your patches during the day, the invisibleness of these will be a god-send! You can now treat acne on the go, without anyone else in the know. Provided you apply them to the skin properly in the first place, the stickiness of these is unparalleled – they stay in place for days if you leave them be. We’ve worn them to the gym, under makeup, in the shower and more and they haven’t budged an inch.
