HOW TO REAPPLY SUNSCREEN WHILE WEARING MAKEUP
For those of us who are passionate about skincare it’s a common problem: how to reapply our sunscreen on top of our makeup?!
If you’re looking to be sun safe while remaining glam, read on for our top tips on how to reapply sunscreen while wearing makeup!
WHY SUNSCREEN IS ESSENTIAL
Sun exposure is one of the key causes of aging and results in everything from blotchy, red skin to sun spots, pigmentation and wrinkles.
Wearing a proper sunscreen that blocks both the sun’s UVB and UVA rays is essential for healthy, youthful looking skin and that means applying one every day to your face, neck and any other body area exposed to the sun.
If you’re still confused about how to tell your sunscreens apart – the SPF in sunscreen refers to it’s UVB protection and the star system refers to it’s UVA protection.
1 Start with the right base
Like all things, the key to getting the right sun protection while wearing makeup is to start with the right base. Make sure you apply a proper sunscreen (ideally SPF 50+ ) underneath your makeup of a morning. You can layer sunscreen under makeup – all you need to do is wait a few minutes to make sure it’s dry first.
Although some people recommend relying exclusively on the SPF in your foundation for your sun protection, we don’t recommend doing this first thing in the morning (just in case the SPF is too diffuse or not applied thickly enough).
Instead, we suggest applying a special purpose SPF 50+ sunscreen first in the morning before applying your makeup – if your makeup also has an SPF function in it, even better!
2 Consider swapping your foundation for a BB cream
This is where our second tip comes in – consider swapping your regular foundation over for a BB Cream or BB Cushion that contains a special purpose SPF. This is standard in nearly all Korean BB Creams and in most primers as well.
The benefit in doing this is that if you need to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day you can do so by simply reapplying your BB Cream. Korean BB Creams layer beautifully even if you do need to reapply them hours later, and they won’t cake or pill like other formulas. To make sure you have even coverage, lightly press the BB Cushion puff into your face and neck.
3 Pat sunscreen over makeup
If you need to be out in the sun during the day while wearing makeup, another good method is to gently pat your sunscreen over the top of your makeup with your palms. If you’re wearing a typical Korean BB Cream or Cushion you won’t have any trouble doing this, as the formulas are usually dewy and light-reflecting anyway, meaning you won’t ruin the look of your makeup. You can even re-use your BB Cushion puff to press the sunscreen over the top of your BB Cream.
4 Limit your sun exposure!
As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than a cure”. Limiting your exposure to the sun, especially during the sun’s harshest hours of 10am to 2pm is the way to go.
If you do need to go out, wearing sun-safe clothing such as long sleeves and pants, a hat and UV sunglasses are great ways to ensure you limit any unnecessary exposure to the sun. Level up? Cover yourself while walking in the sun with a parasol or umbrella!
Make sure you reapply any chemical sunscreens after two hours of actual sun exposure, and more often if you’re going swimming or sweat.
