Why Pay for a Beauty Business Consultant?

Why Pay for a Beauty Business Consultant?

STYLE STORY - Your Go-To for K-beauty since 2014

“Why would I pay you? You only have 4,000 followers.”

This was a real response to a request for help with manufacturing in Korea that landed in our inbox recently.

so why would you pay a consultant?

Every other day someone wants to pick our brain about their beauty business.

They have questions about Korean manufacturers. Cosmetic regulations. Who we use to get our products from Korea to Australia. Which supplier makes the Jelly Ko boxes.

Some people are looking to bounce ideas off us.

Others have been ghosted by a Korean manufacturer and want help getting their project back on track.

Then they discover that our advice isn't free; cue the response we received above.

01Expertise

Followers are not the same as experience

First things first, let's start with the elephant in the room - social media followers.

Follower count measures visibility, which is incredibly important for some roles and people, like influencers. If you are paying someone to promote your product, it goes without saying that their audience size and engagement are highly relevant to the question of their worth.

But if you're asking someone a question about how to manufacture beauty products in Korea, whether the new AICIS regulations on retinal apply to your product or if a new business you're working on makes sense, how many followers the person answering that question has (or doesn't have) is a relatively meaningless yardstick to measure anything against.

Follower count alone tells you next to nothing about a person's experience or qualifications to be answering your question.

For a start, you can't immediately see the years they've spent behind the scenes completing activities that are relevant to your questions (say for example, reviewing cosmetic regulations, resolving manufacturing issues, registering products for sale in various countries, reviewing products for claims compliance or learning the hard way which business decisions ultimately proved to be bad ones). Just to name a few.

In reality, it's those decades of experience that are what you're actually paying for.

At STYLE STORY, we don't pretend to be social media experts.

Our expertise lies elsewhere, building in the Korean beauty industry, working in product and brand development, building out distribution and retail channels.

We were the pioneers behind Korean Beauty in Australia and have launched Korean brands into markets across Australia, the US, Middle East and Europe.

We've worked on manufacturing, packaging, compliance, logistics, wholesale, retail, international distribution and the countless problems that appear between them.

None of that can or should be measured by follower count.

Inside one recent client consultation

What problems can we solve in an hour?

A practical session with our team moves across regulatory, commercial and operational questions quickly and efficiently because, to put it simply - we've been there, done that, bought the T-shirt.

In one recent hour-long consultation with an Australian client we covered:

01AICIS ingredient registration, costs, timelines and procedures
02Avoiding TGA claims for cosmetic products
03Australian cosmetic labelling requirements
04Product liability insurance
05GST obligations and barcodes
06International freight costs
07What happens after products leave the Korean manufacturer
08Australian customs, clearance and simpler import procedures

That was one hour.

Our value is being able to answer your questions quickly & efficiently because we already know the answers from first hand experience.

02 / Independence

If the advice is free, you're paying for it another way

There is nothing inherently wrong with asking for guidance. You can ask Google. ChatGPT. Internet strangers.

But free advice is not necessarily accurate; nor is it necessarily independent.

Who benefits from the answer?

If there's no fee, ask who benefits from the answer.

Because inevitably, you're going to be paying somewhere down the line, either through higher product costs, MOQs, commissions, service fees or by being directed towards an option that best serves the person giving the advice.

Sometimes that cost only becomes clear much later. At that point, changing course may be both difficult and expensive.

STYLE STORY is an independent third-party consultancy.

We aren't paid by factories to persuade you to manufacture there. We're not going to rope you in so that you can never manufacture at the same place without going through us.

Instead, you're paying us directly for our expertise. And that means our job is to assess what makes sense for you.

Our independence is part of what our consultation fee covers.

03Judgement

You're not paying for an answer to a random question

In 2026, there is more free information about starting a beauty brand online than you can poke a stick at. If the answer to your question were genuinely that simple, you could just Google it.

When you book in for a consultation with us, what you're actually buying is an answer to your question that factors in the commercial reality and consequences for your business. The answer combines more than 15 years of accumulated expertise, context and judgement, but applied to your specific case.

That answer may only take a few minutes to explain. But knowing the answer is the part that took years to learn.

04Visibility

A small following tells you very little

Building a social media following and knowing how to run a business are two different skill sets.

The beauty industry has become so intertwined with influencer culture that it is easy to treat public visibility as a universal measure of credibility.

But follower count isn't an accurate measure for choosing a business consultant.

It simply tells you how many people chose to follow a particular account. It doesn't tell you whether they have the business acumen, skills or knowledge to actually answer the problem keeping you up at night.

05Value

What you're really buying is fewer expensive mistakes

Good advice helps you make better decisions earlier. You know the old saying: time is money.

Sometimes, the value in a consultation lies in a contact - a person that becomes invaluable to your business.

Other times, it's an answer that saves you months of research or a year of chasing dead ends.

Independent Korean beauty consultancy expertise from STYLE STORY

You are not paying for a follower count.

What you're paying for is independent advice and expertise. The years it took to know how to answer your question and more importantly, what it means for your business.
