Should I Start Using Anti Aging Products Early to Prevent Wrinkles?
While we are all about keeping our skin looking young and healthy for as long as possible, we also respect the intelligence of our bodies. It turns out, sometimes our skin really does know best.
Skin in its younger years has a lot to deal with - acne, oiliness and congestion, just to name a few. However, when we are in our teens and early 20’s, our skin already has a really healthy rate of skin cell turnover. This is what most anti-ageing products are targeting.
So the needs of teen skin and skin in its 20s versus more mature skin types is actually very different. More mature skin is tackling things like dryness, pigmentation and dullness.
As we age, we can begin to add ingredients like VitaminC or retinol to our skincare routine, but this is rarely needed in younger skin.
The other big thing to take into account when we're talking anti-aging products is texture. Anti-ageing moisturisers are often made with thick and heavy consistencies. This is because they are specifically targeting mature skin, which is often dry due to a change in hormones.
When these kinds of heavy products are used on young, teen skin they can end up clogging the pores, resulting in acne or over production of oil in the skin.
So while starting to use anti-aging products early to prevent wrinkles sounds good in theory, it can actually have unintended consequences.
Instead, focus on skincare products that are right for your skin type. Some of our favourite brands for younger skin include COSRX and Benton.
While we always want to care for our skin at every age that doesn’t always mean reaching for the anti-ageing products in our early 20's.
