Sephora Pulls Out of Korea
In this week’s news headlines we’ve got a new beauty buzzword for 2024 and which popular international retailer is pulling out of Korea and why? Stick around to find out on episode 242 of the Korean Beauty Show podcast.
Sephora has announced this week its plan to pull out of Korea. This is not exactly surprising given that there have been rumours flying for at least the last 2 years that the retailer was in trouble.
However, it is another blow to consumers who are being left with fewer options to shop beauty offline in the post-pandemic retail climate. Some outletsare reporting that Sephora was unable to withstand the pressure from local retail chain Olive Young, which now essentially holds a monopoly on the market. This is also bad news for those looking for diversity in beauty products and also makeup shade ranges.
In a recent report, Cosmetics Business ranked peptides as a top five skincare trend for this year. Many Korean beauty brands are also releasing products with peptides.Analysts say that the reason is due to the "growing interest of consumers in skin-recovery ingredients."
According to Future Market Insights, the global cosmetics peptide manufacturing market is expected to grow in value from 244.2 million dollars this year to 411.9 million dollars in 2034 (an annual average growth rate of 5.4%).
While peptides are not a new invention (they have been around for the last 20 years), they are now more accessible than ever.
One of our STYLE STORY followers came across a beauty brand marketing melting collagen masks and was interested to know whether they work. The short answer is no; at least, not in the way the marketing is suggesting.
The reason you use this kind of technology is to enhance absorption of the product’s active ingredients. However, in this case, all collagen can really do is hydrate your skin. It’s not actually penetrating your skin or body to increase your own natural collagen stores.
I honestly think you’ll see better results from the misting sprays used to melt the collagen than the masks themselves. These are very effective at hydrating the skin and giving you "glass skin".
