Best and Worst of Laneige
Tune in for a fun new segment where we “rate” the best and worst of Korean skincare. On episode 253 of the Korean Beauty Show podcast, Lauren is sharing the best and worst of cult K-Beauty Laneige, offering her insights as a distributor of Laneige products for over 10 years. Which products did customers love and which ended in tears for everyone? Tune in to find out.
Laneige's Lip Sleeping Mask was a customer favourite at STYLE STORY for many years. It was so popular we could barely keep it on the shelf no matter what flavour it was in. The only thing I would say about this product is that because it has a very waxy, sticky formula and I personally find it is better to use overnight, which is also what the product is designed for. It can be a little too gloopy for day time use if you're after a product that doubles for both day and night.
Laneige's Cream Skin Refiner was another one of our customer's favourites that a lot of people rave about. I’ve already shared my personal opinions on it previously, which is that I think it’s fine but possibly overrated. I’ve gone through several jars and I do enjoy it. One good thing about it is that it’s rosacea safe. I find it to be a nice, hydrating layer.
This product was an absolute favourite of our customers for may years. It’s a classic Korean primer style that incorporates a bit of glow with a hydrating product. It's designed to make your makeup glide on. The product formulation and packaging been through several iterations over the years but this remains a staple in Laneige’s collection, which I think is a testament to how popular this product really is.
Now don’t get me wrong - this is a bestseller of theirs and has many fans around the world. However, I personally have always thought this product is a bit of a mess and have never been able to make any of the many iterations of this product work for my skin. It’s just not sensitive skin friendly, I don’t like the fragrance and I don’t enjoy using it.
I think the combination of Vitamin C and fragrance was just way too much for my skin. This was like a breakout in a bottle for. It also wasn’t a very popular among our customers either although the serum of the same name was.
I’d like to give a dishonourable mention to the serum in this line. The amount of products that exploded and leaked in transit on our way to us or our customers cost our business badly. I feel like we refunded more people for products that had leaked in transit or oxidised than people that actually got to try them.
Laneige has had so many BB Cushions over the years and I’ve always found them to be really average formulations. Even though they are made by Amore Pacific, who makes many great cushion foundations - include the product that launched the entire category (IOPE's Air Cushion), the Laneige ones have consistently underperformed for me. I've found most of them to be overpriced and just average. This is a fiercely competitive category in Korea itself and there are just so many other great products on the market.
This product is the lip balm in a tube. I have it for over a year and a half and I’ve been trying to use it. I just find myself using it out of necessity rather than the fact that I like it. I don’t like letting products go to waste and there’s technically nothing wrong with it it’s just an average but overpriced product in my opinion.
This product has an interesting texture and feels really great on the skin but when I flipped it over I realised the main ingredient giving it the effect is a copolymer, which is used in skincare to form a film when it dries, which is what gives you the glass skin look. A similar ingredient is in the virally popular Biodance overnight masks, which gives the skin a similar look when you take the mask off.
Update: The ingredient in the Biodance Collagen Masks is actually Acrylates Copolymer. The ingredient in the Laneige Bouncy and Firm Eye Sleeping Mask is Sodium Acrylates Crosspolymer-2, which is similar but it a crosspolymer rather than a copolymer.
