BATTLE OF THE PIMPLE PATCHES

Today there are two products in the ring battling it out for the title of best pimple patch.

In the battle of the pimple patches who’s gonna come out on top?

THE PROBLEM

Pimples. Breakouts. Acne. Zits. Whatever you call them, we all get them and we all want them gone. Pimple Patches works to treat the root cause of open pimples, simultaneously acting as a cover to prevent picking and scarring.

They’re one of K-Beauty’s best inventions but which product deserves the title of “best” pimple patch?

Let’s meet the contestants.

THE CONTESTANTS

SOME BY MI’s Clear Spot Patch vs COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch.

These are both popular products on the market and retail for the very reasonable price of $7.95 (SOME BY MI) and $6.95 (COSRX). For that price you’ll get 18 patches (SOME BY MI) vs 24 patches (COSRX).

But how do the patches themselves compare?

COSRX ACNE PIMPLE MASTER PATCH

Beloved by beauty bloggers around the world, these hydrocolloid patches flatten and heal acne and pimples with heads. They also work to heal blemishes and prevents future breakouts and scarring.

These patches are made of hydrocolloid, a type of wound dressing that feels similar to a hydrogel sheet mask in texture. Once stuck to your skin, the patches treat breakouts by containing infection and bacteria and absorbing debris from blackheads and whiteheads. Because they don’t contain any active ingredients, you won’t experience any dryness or flaking after using these patches. This makes them ideal for sensitive skin types.

One limitation of these patches is that they are designed to treat surface pimples only, and only work on pimples that have come to a head (whiteheads). They aren’t designed to treat deeper, cystic-type acne that has its root deep below the skin.

With three differently sized patches in a pack, you can choose which one will cover your bases. Each pack contains 7mm x 10EA, 10mm x 5EA and 12mm x 9EA.

SOME BY MI CLEAR SPOT PATCH

A new addition to the brand’s famous 30 Days Miracle series, these waterproof yet breathable hydrocolloid patches encourage the healing of acne by absorbing pus and protecting the wound against bacterial infection.
SOME BY MI Clear Spot Patch
Unlike other pimple patches, these patches contain a range of different ingredients, including salicylic acid, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and more. This means they work to actively dry out acne, rather than simply working as a cover to absorb pus.
These patches are more transparent than COSRX’s, made with a thicker material at the centre to help absorbs fluids, while the thinner edge ensures a natural cover-up and long-lasting adherence to skin.
They come in 2 different sizes, so your pimples are covered, whether big or small (10mm*9ea + 12mm*9ea).

VERDICT

So who emerges as the winner in this battle of the pimple patches?

We hate to be fence sitters but the truth is that these are two *very* different products. It’s hard to call either one an outright “winner”.

On the one hand, COSRX’s patches contain no drugs – they only work using hydrocolloid. This is great for pimples that have come to a head and have pus to draw out. On the other hand, SOME BY MI’s patches are medicated – they contain a WHOLE heap of ingredients, including salicylic acid and tea tree, which makes them more suited for deeper pimples and cysts. However, they also contain drying ingredients that won’t work on all skin types, including some common triggers like tea tree, peppermint and lavender.

Which patch is better for you will depend on which type of acne you’re treating, as well as your skin’s sensitivity to any of the ingredients. If you find salicylic acid, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus oil or tea tree to be too drying and harsh on your skin (as many people with sensitive skin do), then we recommend skipping SOME BY MI’s patches in favour of COSRX.

However, remember COSRX’s patches will only target surface-level whiteheads. If you’re after a treatment that targets deeper level acne, you’re barking up the wrong tree.
