Best-Selling Kbeauty Products for the First Half of 2023
On Episode 209 of the Korean Beauty Show podcast Lauren shares the best-selling Kbeauty products for the first half of 2023. Plus, are Korea's sun patches a passing fad or here to stay? Korea's MFDS gives the green light for a new sunscreen ingredient. Plus, which popular Korean Beauty sunscreen caused Lauren to have a bad allergic reaction?
I recently did an interview with Cosmetics Design Asia about Korea's sun patch trend.
While the hype remains strong in Korea it remains to be seen if they will take off overseas. I discussed the fact that there are a lot of limitations compared to actual sunscreen plus potential regulatory issues too, given the nature of the claims being made.
New Korean Sunscreen Ingredient Given the Green Light
Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) recently announced that they will be amending Korea's cosmetic regulations to approve the use of Methoxypropylamino Cyclohexenylidene Ethoxyethylcyanoacetate (MCE) as a sunscreen ingredient.
This is a chemical sunscreen ingredient that's effective for ultra long UVA (370-400nm). It has a peak absorbance of 385 nm.
JID Innovations 2021;X:100070 claims that:
"Addition of MCE absorber in sunscreen formulations leads to full coverage of UV spectrum and improved UVA1 photoprotection. The data support benefits in the long term on sun-induced consequences, especially those related to public health care issues."
Question of the Week: Is it okay to keep using a sugar scrub after the sugar dissolves?
Yes -it's totally fine to keep using the product after the sugar crystals dissolve. This will happen gradually over time once the product has been opened but the product itself can be used for 1 year after opening.
Coming in second place was Subi's Perfect Pimple Patch, which has been a best-seller since we launched it in 2019. It's also a top-seller on Woolworths and one of our most-reviewed products of all time.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the year was this Sleeping Mask. Sales are up 167% compared to the previous period. Previously, this product wasn't even in our top 10.
Unsurprising was seeing this Lip Sleeping Mask at the top of the charts. It is a best-seller at Woolworths and sells out consistently every time we have it in stock.
Another unsurprising entrant at the top of the charts was COSRX's cult favourite Snail Mucin Essence, which has been one of our best-sellers since it was first launched by the brand.
Dewy Glaze Toner was launched only a year ago but in that year has quickly gone on to become one of our best-sellers and most loved products, receiving rave reviews from beauty industry professionals and customers alike.
Toppling more well-known cleansing balms like Heimish All Clean Balm was Subi's Bare Skin Balm, which was also a best-seller last year. Fans love the dreamy texture and colour and the superior cleansing abilities for a great price point.
Dr Jart's green to beige colour correcting makeup treamtent is another extremely popular K-Beauty product. It doesn't hurt that it regularly goes viral on TikTok either!
Missha BB Cream / D'Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum
Lightweight and evens out skin tone. Sheer coverage. Sets to a satin finish; not flat matte or oily/shiny. Looks and feels very natural. Good shade range in terms of catering for deeper skin tones but more undertones in the light to medium category would make it even better. Given the affordable price point and the ethical values of the brand, this was a great purchase!"

Best and Worst of the Week
Worst- I had a serious allergic reaction to the Beauty of Joseon Rice Sunscreen which has left me babying my skin. Chemical sunscreens are often not the best fit for really sensitive skin, which mine is.
