Do You Apply Toner To A Wet Face Or A Dry Face?

Toner is an essential part of any good skincare routine, as it helps to reset the skin’s pH balance after cleansing.

Today we’re answering a question put to us by one of our Instagram followers: Do you apply toner to a wet face or a dry face?

Wet Or Dry?

It’s best to apply toner to a dry face, especially if you’re using a pH balancing toner.

To use toner properly, after cleansing, pat your face dry or dry it with a light towel. Then, place some toner onto a cotton pad and spread it over your face and neck. You can follow up by misting or spritzing a second layer of toner onto your face for extra moisture.

Keep going if you’re following the 7 skins method, or else you can move onto your serum. There’s no need to dry your face after toning; simply move onto your next layer.

Why Should You Use A Toner?

If you’re still not convinced about the the benefits of using a toner, here are a few reasons why you should: toners reset your pH level.

This all comes back to chemistry: Facial cleansers are designed to be slightly more alkaline than your skin so they can remove oil from your face. While this is great for cleansing, it means that most cleansers will throw your skin’s natural pH balance off slightly.

This is where toners come in handy.

A good toner is designed to restore your skin’s pH balance to its optimal level and reset your skin.

Maintaining the optimal pH balance in your skin is important for the skin’s barrier health, which assists to keep moisture in and bacteria out. The correct pH balance is also important in helping to prevent acne, especially for those of us with acne-prone skin.

Which Toner Should I Use?

As with all skincare products, you should choose a toner that’s right for your skin type, and skip any ingredients you know your skin doesn’t agree with. Don’t forget to patch test first if you’re not sure.

For all skin types, Jelly Ko's deliciously hydrating 2-in-1 essence toner is a perfect fit. Bursting with juicy goodness, your skin will drink up this blend of hydrators, humectants and antioxidants. Rather than plain old water, we infused it with birch sap to plump and nourish skin. Also, why stop at one type of hyaluronic acid when you could have three?

For acne prone skin, we love Benton's Snail Bee High Content Essence. With a whopping 90% of star beauty ingredient snail mucin, along with bee venom it helps repair acne, skin tone and scarring.

For dry skin, try Jelly Ko Dewy Glaze Toner or Laneige Cream Skin Toner

For oily skin, we can’t go past APLB AHA BHA PHA Glutathione Cica Toner (200ml). It's made of hard hitting acids which work wonders for the skin. The APLB AHA BHA PHA toner also include Glutathione which is great for brightening the skin and Centella Asiatica (Cica)

For irritated skin, give K-Beauty favourite ingredient centella asiatica a go! APLB Centella Complex Mist Toner is perfect, with a mist function that means you don't need to rub your hands across irritated skin to use it.

For dull or pigmented skin, we love Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner. This hydrating toner is packed with beneficial aloe and salicylic acid to prep your skin to properly absorb the next layers in your skincare.

For sensitive or damaged skin, try One Thing Artemisia (Korean Mugwort). This single star ingredient toner is excellent in improving skin redness and sensitivity
