New K-Beauty Products ft Retinol and Bakuchiol on STYLE STORY
K-Beauty has been famous for its innovative aprpoach to skincare. Which meant a whole lot of new ingredients we'd never tried before!
But when it came to some of the older ones, they were conspicuous by their absence. It may have taken a while but Korean skincare has finally started to embrace traditional western anti-aging ingredients.
Yep, you read that right! The biggest skincare trends in Korea for this year include Retinol and Bakuchiol.
A Quick Recap on Retinol & Bakuchiol
Retinol
One of the most well-known anti-ageing ingredients (and one of the most studied).
Belonging to the Vitamin A family, retinoids go further than simply treating the top layer of the skin (the epidermis). They penetrate to the dermis below, boosting the production of elastin and collagen.
Retinoids stimulate quicker cell turnover to reduce fine lines, pigmentation, and other signs of ageing.
But wait….there’s more!
Retinol is also an incredibly powerful ingredient in the treatment of acne because it:
reduces sebum production
promotes blood vessel formation, and
unclogs pores.
It’s also incredible at treating acne scarring. There are however many negative side effects to retinol, and it doesn’t work for everyone.
Side effects can include dryness, flakiness, itchiness, skin sensitivity, UV sensitivity. It is also not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Rooted in ancient Chinese medicine and found in the leaves and seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia, Bakuchiol is a potent, natural antioxidant.
It boasts anti-inflammatory properties which makes it ideal for those suffering from acne.
A 2019 study confirmed no difference in the effectiveness of retinol and Bakuchiol in the treatment of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
Bakuchiol's recent rise to fame is thanks to its effectiveness and suitability for all skin types.
Unlike retinol, Bakuchiol doesn’t decrease the size of the oil glands so it won’t cause irritation. Bakuchiol also won’t make your skin more sensitive to UV exposure.
The downsides are that because studies into Bakuchiol are new, specialists recommend to err on the side of caution and not use it either while pregnant or breastfeeding.
