From stinging nose strips to painful extractions, blackheads are one of those pesky skin problems that never seem to budge. So - how do you get rid of blackheads?
Firstly, it’s important that we get a few things straight.
What IS a blackhead?
Blackheads are small, dark bumps that appear on the skin due to clogged hair follicles. Although they mostly appear on the face, they can also pop up on the back, chest, neck, arms and shoulders.
Blackheads appear when there is a clog at the opening of the hair follicle. If the skin over the bump stays closed you have a whitehead (Hello, Subi Perfect Pimple Patches!) If the skin opens, oxidisation occurs and causes the clogged hair follicle to turn black. Voila - blackheads.
WARNING SIGN
Not all dark coloured little nasties on your skin are blackheads. Proceed with caution.
Those with oily skin or enlarged pores may have sebaceous filaments that appear more noticeable than others. These are lighter in colour; think beige and grey, but still appear as a clogged pore.
Put down the tweezers and stop picking at these immediately!
While sebaceous filaments CAN lead to blackheads, they are a natural composition of the skin and should be left alone.
LET'S TALK REAL SKIN
I know - we wish that airbrushing could be used in real life too. Sigh.
Despite all of the images that we are bombarded with on social media (looking at you, Khloe Kardashian), natural skin will always have slight imperfections. It’s ok. It’s natural!
If you start attacking things like sebaceous filaments you risk scarring, spreading bacteria and the dreaded popped blood vessels. Not cute.
Any sebum that you do remove from your filaments will be refilled anyway so it’s best to walk away and make yourself a peppermint tea.

How To Get Rid Of Blackheads?
