Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS CC CREAM?
The “CC” in “CC Cream” generally stands for “colour correcting”. CC Creams are designed to correct uneven skin tone, sallowness and redness. CC creams generally contain light-diffusing particles to even out your skin tone plus a whoooole heap of other beneficial ingredients that target the root causes of poor skin tone in the first place.
WHAT IS A “WHITENING” PRODUCT?
“Whitening” is a Konglish (Korean-English) word for products that are designed to improve uneven skin tone, sunspots, pigmentation, freckles and acne scars – all the things that give you coloured spots on your face or a less-than-even complexion.
They don’t actually affect your skin colour – rather, they enhance the clarity, luminosity, and evenness of your skin tone.
“Brightening” is a much better word to describe what these products really do.
When you use products with “whitening” properties, they won’t whiten your skin, but rather make it glow and become more even-toned.
TL;DR Don’t be afraid of using commercial Korean beauty products for fear that they will make you paler or change your skin colour.
HOW CAN I TRY YOUR PRODUCTS BEFORE BUYING THEM?
Join us on social media where you can apply for our Tester’s Club. Tester’s Club members receive free K-Beauty products in exchange for their honest reviews. Also check out our offline offerings in Australia, or stop by our Seoul office.
WHAT BRAND OR PRODUCT IS ALL NATURAL AND/OR ORGANIC?
Be wary of any beauty products labelled as “100% organic”.
There are no industry standards or legal restrictions on the labelling of organic beauty products in Australia – only voluntary “certification schemes”.
For a product to be truly 100% organic, it would also have to be entirely free of preservatives. Unfortunately, if a product was entirely organic, it would also go off quickly.
Many Korean beauty brands do focus on using minimal ingredients or natural, plant-based ingredients in their formulas, as well as traditional oriental medicines.
As of 2018, animal testing is illegal in Korea, so companies are unable to test their cosmetics on products in Korea.
If you’re looking for more natural alternatives, we recommend Korean beauty brands Pyunkang Yul, B-LAB I Am Sorry Just Cleansing, Polatam, Soroci, COSRX, Benton, Olivarrier and Innisfree.
WHAT IS THE EXPIRY DATE OF MY PRODUCT?
Korean products are usually labelled with a manufacturing date instead of an expiry date. Products have a shelf-life of two to three years, depending on each individual product and brand, so don’t be alarmed if you receive a product stamped with a date prior to the date you bought the product!
WHAT SKINCARE ROUTINE SHOULD I BE FOLLOWING?
There is no one routine that can be followed.
As a minimum, we recommend 1 Cleanse 2 Tone and 3 Moisturise twice a day for both men and women.
SUNSCREEN – AN AUSSIE “MUST”
It goes without saying that no Aussie should ever leave home without wearing a good sunscreen. The higher the SPF factor the better, but as a bare minimum at least an SPF24+.
WHAT IS THE KOREAN SKINCARE ROUTINE?
Koreans are widely recognised as having some of the most flawless skin on the planet, so they’re clearly doing something right!
At the heart of the Korean beauty routine is the need to HYDRATE.
Keeping skin well nourished and moisturised makes it look and feel softer, plumper and look more radiant. Properly hydrated skin can actually take years off your face as it softens any lines and gives the skin a more supple appearance.
So what is a Korean Beauty Routine?
For all you need to know about the Korean Beauty Routine, STYLE STORY’s comprehensive Blog offers a variety of resources.
A Korean Beauty Routine typically includes the following steps:
DAY SKINCARE ROUTINE
1. Cleanse – use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt without stripping the skin of essential oils.
2. Tone* – moisturise and prep the skin for the next step of skincare.
3. Essence – enhance the skin’s cellular renewal process, increasing its firmness, elasticity, tone and brightness.
4. Moisturise – hydrate and protect the skin from the external environment.
5. SPF – apply a good quality, high SPF sunscreen every day.
NIGHT SKINCARE ROUTINE
As your skin does most of its healing and renewal at night it is important to layer your products to ensure your skin is adequately hydrated.
In general, night care products are heavier than their day-counterparts.
6. Double Cleanse – this step is quintessentially Korean. It is designed to give you squeaky-clean skin!
Cleanse Step 1 ) Use an oil based cleanser to get rid of your makeup;
Cleanse Step 2) Follow up with a foam cleanser to get rid of dirt and impurities.
7. Tone – moisturise and prep the skin for the next step of skincare.
8. Face Mask – these come in different forms (sheet masks, wash off masks etc). They can be used nightly or applied 2 – 3 times a week.
9. Essence – enhance the skin’s cellular renewal process, increasing its firmness, elasticity, tone and brightness.
10. Serum / Ampoule / Lotion / Emulsion – provide a nutrient-enriched hit directly to your skin to address specific skin concerns and/or anti-aging issues.
11. Eye Cream – prevent eye bags, dark circles and puffiness by providing a hit of rich moisture directly to your delicate under-eye area.
12. Night Cream – richer than a day cream, the cream you apply at night should be thick. This helps to maximise your skin’s natural turnover while you sleep and locks in essential nutrients and hydration.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WESTERN AND KOREAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS?
From price, ingredients, formula and design to approach and purpose, Korean skincare is different to western skincare.
Advanced Ingredients and Formulas
Korean skincare focuses on using the latest, innovative ingredients and techniques. Recent trends have included snail mucin, donkey milk, propolis, centella asiatica, ginseng, fermented ingredients, and rice bran oil!
Korean products are much cheaper than western products because manufacturing costs are much lower in Korea. There are also far more beauty brands that make for stiff competition. It is estimated that there are around 10,000 skincare companies in Korea.
Beauty-obsessed Koreans are always on the lookout for the next Big Thing in skincare. Innovation is key so that companies can make their products stand out from the competition. Koreans are not necessarily brand-loyal, but instead many are happy to shop around to find the latest and best products that work for their skin.
Skincare vs Makeup
Whereas western cosmetics tend to focus more on covering up and hiding any flaws, Korean beauty products combine skincare elements to try and fix any underlying problems.
Many Korean makeup products contain beneficial nutrients to restore skin’s health.
Korean skincare focuses on soothing and nourishing the skin. Whereas western skincare often focuses on stripping away layers and exfoliating to reveal new skin, Korean skincare is all about putting nutrients back into the skin and nurturing it.
Dry skin is nobody’s friend, and can make skin look older (as wrinkles and fine lines look more visible) and makeup look cakey and flakey. Korean skincare focuses on making skin as dewy, luminous and hydrated as possible. That’s why there are so many layers of hydrating products to be applied!
Koreans believe in cleansing twice at night – once with an oil based cleanser, which is designed to get rid of the day’s makeup and once with a foam cleanser that is designed to remove any leftover impurities. This is completely clean skin, and prepare it to properly absorb the next layers in skincare.
