WHAT IS BB CREAM?

Blemish Balm, Blemish Base or Beblesh Balm

BB Cream is skincare + makeup combined.

BB cream was originally developed for those who had received laser treatment on their faces. Old school lasers were harsh and left patients with raw, red skin for months after their treatment. Although their skin was too sensitive to apply foundation, they wanted something to cover up!

BB creams were invented to improve the look of their skin while also soothing and caring for it as it recovered.

In the 1980s, Korean and Japanese beauty companies adapted BB Creams for cosmetic use, creating the first cosmetic BB creams. These creams soothe, heal and improve the skin, while providing full makeup coverage.

COVER AND TREAT SKIN ISSUES

The coverage is intended to both cover AND treat skin issues such as acne, sun spots and age spots. Japanese and Korean BB creams also have anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory, brightening and soothing effects.

STYLE STORY Australia’s favourite Korean BB Creams?  Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream, which has sold more than 30 million units worldwide.

WHAT IS CC CREAM?

The “CC” in “CC Cream” generally stands for “colour correcting”. CC Creams are designed to correct uneven skin tone, sallowness and redness. CC creams generally contain light-diffusing particles to even out your skin tone plus a whoooole heap of other beneficial ingredients that target the root causes of poor skin tone in the first place.

WHAT IS A BB CUSHION?

BB Cushion compacts are the latest and greatest beauty innovation to come out of beauty-obsessed Korea. These exceptional beauty innovations contain a unique formula-soaked sponge that has all the benefits of a true Korean BB cream (think anti-ageing, moisturising, brightening, tone-evening and SPF protection) plus an innovative non-absorbing applicator sponge through which air is pumped into the foundation.

Korea’s IOPE Air Cushion has reached cult-like status throughout Asia, where it is estimated that one is sold every 30 seconds!

WHAT IS A “WHITENING” PRODUCT?!

We get it – you just paid $40 for your weekly spray tan – why would you want to look whiter?!

Don’t be worried – these products don’t actually affect your skin color – just the clarity, luminosity, and evenness of your skin tone.

"Whitening" is the Korean word for skin brightening products that improve your skin's clarity, luminosity and evenness

“Whitening” is the Korean word for skin brightening products that improve your skin’s clarity, luminosity and evenness

“Whitening” is a Konglish (Korean-English) word. It is used to explain what the product does. When Koreans pick up these products they understand that the product is designed to improve uneven skin tone, including minimising sunspots, pigmentation, freckles and acne scars – all the things that give you coloured spots on your face!

Brightening” is a much better word to describe (in real English) what these products really do.

When you use products with “whitening” properties, they won’t whiten you, but rather make your skin glow. One of the main things that usually happens when you use these products is that your skin becomes more even-toned. If you have bad acne scarring, you will notice that these products fade the scars with long term use.

Don’t be afraid of using commercial Korean beauty products for fear that they will make you paler or change your skin colour.

WHAT SKINCARE ROUTINE SHOULD I BE FOLLOWING?

There is no one routine that can be followed. However, as a bare minimum we recommend Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising twice a day for both men and women.

SUNSCREEN – AN AUSSIE “MUST”

It goes without saying that no Aussie should ever leave home without wearing a good sunscreen. The higher the SPF factor the better, but as a bare minimum at least an SPF24+.

THE KOREAN BEAUTY ROUTINE

If you are after a good, solid skin routine that will set your skin up for life, it is hard to go past the Rolls-Royce of Skincare, the Korean Beauty Routine.

Koreans are widely recognised as having some of the most flawless skin on the planet, so they’re clearly doing something right!

At the heart of the Korean beauty routine is the need to HYDRATE.

Keeping skin well nourished and moisturised makes it look and feel softer, plumper, peachier and more radiant. This can take years off your face by improving the look of wrinkles and fine lines! Do not underestimate the benefit that well hydrated skin has on your appearance.

So what is a Korean Beauty Routine?

Usually, a Korean Beauty Routine includes the following steps:

DAY

STYLE STORY - Australia's Korean Beauty Store

Step 1 of the Korean Double Cleanse involves cleansing with an oil based cleanser, like Banila’s best-selling Clean It Zero

1. Cleanse – use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt without stripping the skin of essential oils.

2. Tone* – moisturise and prep the skin for the next step of skincare.

3. Essence – enhance the skin’s cellular renewal process, increasing its firmness, elasticity, tone and brightness.

4. Moisturise – hydrate and protect the skin from the external environment.

5. SPF – apply a good quality, high SPF sunscreen every day.

NIGHT

As your skin does most of its healing and renewal at night it is important to layer your products to ensure your skin is adequately hydrated. You will notice instant results if you follow a proper night care regime. In general, night care products are heavier than their day-counterparts.

6.  Double Cleanse – this step is quintessentially Korean. It is designed to give you squeaky-clean skin!

Cleanse Step 1 ) Use an oil based cleanser to get rid of your makeup;

Cleanse Step 2) Follow up with a foam cleanser to get rid of dirt and impurities.

7. Tone* – moisturise and prep the skin for the next step of skincare.

8. Face Mask – an essential part of any good skincare regime. Face masks come in different forms (sheet masks, wash off masks etc). They can be used nightly but for the time poor, should be applied at least 2 – 3 times a week.

9. Essence –  enhance the skin’s cellular renewal process, increasing its firmness, elasticity, tone and brightness.

10. Serum / Ampoule / Lotion / Emulsion – provide a nutrient-enriched hit directly to your skin to address specific skin concerns and/or anti-ageing issues.

11. Eye Cream – prevent eye bags, dark circles and puffiness by providing a hit of rich moisture directly to your delicate under-eye area.

12. Night Cream  – richer than a day cream, the cream you apply at night should be thick. This helps to maximise your skin’s natural turnover while you sleep and locks in essential nutrients and hydration.

 * Unlike many western toners, which act as another step in cleansing, Korean toners actually prepare your skin to receive and absorb whatever you apply next. If you don’t tone, your serum or moisturiser will likely just sit on top of your skin instead of actually being absorbed, which robs your skin of essential nutrients (and wastes moisturiser!)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WESTERN AND KOREAN SKINCARE PRODUCTS?

Skinfood Royal Honey Propolis Essence

Korean skincare focuses on using the latest, most advanced ingredients

Everything! From price, ingredients, formula and design to approach and purpose, Korean skincare is very different to western skincare.

Advanced Ingredients and Formulas

In general, Korean skincare focuses on using the latest, most advanced ingredients and techniques. In recent years, trends have included snail mucin (snail slime!), donkey milk, traditional oriental ingredients like ginseng, fermented ingredients, sparkling water and even placenta!

Price

The products are much cheaper to buy than their western counterparts because manufacturing costs are much lower in Korea. There is also stiff competition between the various Korean cosmetic companies to offer the best for less as beauty-obssessed Koreans are always on the lookout for the next Big Thing in skincare. Innovation is key as there are hundreds of Korean cosmetic labels competing against each other, compared to the western market where the same big cosmetic companies tend to monopolise the market.

Skincare vs Makeup

Whereas western cosmetics tend to focus more on covering up and hiding flaws, Korean beauty products combine skincare elements to try and fix the problem instead. In general, Korean cosmetics focus on repairing skin issues while hiding flaws. They contain many beneficial nutrients and ingredients that are designed to make your skin healthier.

Korean beauty products are innovative because beauty-obssessed Koreans are always on the look out for “the Next Big Thing”

Layering Products and Nourishing

Korean skincare focuses on soothing and nourishing the skin rather than stripping it. Whereas western skincare often focuses on stripping away layers and exfoliating to reveal new skin, Korean skincare is all about putting nutrients back into the skin and nurturing it. Each product serves a specific purpose and is designed to be softly applied, patted, tapped or massaged into the skin.

Deep Hydration

Koreans know that dry skin is sad skin and can make your skin look older, as wrinkles and fine lines look more visible the drier your skin is. Korean skincare is all about trying to make your skin as dewy, luminous and hydrated as possible. That’s why there are so many layers of hydrating products to be applied!

Double Cleansing

Koreans believe in cleansing twice at night – once with an oil based cleanser, which is designed to get rid of the day’s makeup and once with a foam cleanser that is designed to remove any leftover impurities. After cleansing twice your skin will be squeaky clean and ready to be layered up with hydrating lotions.

WHAT BRAND OR PRODUCT IS ALL NATURAL AND/OR ORGANIC?

Be wary of any beauty products labelled as “100% organic”. There are no industry standards or legal restrictions on the labelling of organic beauty products in Australia– there are only voluntary “certification schemes”. For a product to be truly 100% organic, it would also have to be entirely free of preservatives. Unfortunately, if a product was entirely organic, it would go off quickly.

That said, many Korean beauty brands do focus on using minimal ingredients or natural, plant-based ingredients in their formulas, as well as traditional oriental medicines. If you’re looking for more natural alternative, we recommend beauty brands B-Labs I Am Sorry Just Cleansing, PolatamWHENSoroci, Thank You FarmerCOSRXBenton, Elizavecca and Innisfree.

WHAT IS THE EXPIRY DATE OF MY PRODUCT?

Korean products are usually labelled with a manufacturing date instead of an expiry date. Products have a shelf-life of two to three years, depending on each individual product and brand, so don’t be alarmed if you receive a product stamped with a date prior to the date you bought the product!
